Today, companies are no longer required to instruct their employees about all the activities carried on. Now, the company employs candidates who can adapt quickly to changes or new technologies.

Hence, there is a scope for Agile employees who can understand the requirements of the client and can implement them quickly. The companies don’t need to be told what must be done or how you can approach them. This trait is essential for anyone who wants to work in an organization that uses the Scrum framework.

Scrum and Agility

When a company is working on product development, several teams will be contributing to making the product successful. How this happens, will depend on how teams collaborate and finish their tasks. Usually, there are two options to plan the whole framework of product development:

  • A sequential planning approach where a team works on the product and pass it to the other teams. This is a traditional approach that doesn’t work well with software or apps development that needs a holistic approach.
  • The Scrum framework where several teams work together. These are self-organizing teams who are in touch with each other constantly throughout the whole development phase. They either physically co-locate or through an online portal for maintaining communication.

The benefits of implementing the Scrum framework is that all team members understand that the requirements of the projects can change at any time and cannot be predicted in any way. When the companies use the traditional planning model, they won’t be able to understand the changes quickly and adapt to them. With the Scrum framework, the team members will be following an empirical approach that allows them to implement changes quickly. With this agility, the team can develop the product successfully.

The Product Owner’s role

When you are working as a Product Owner in the Scrum framework, you will be managing the business aspect of product development. You will be acting as the mode of communication between the members of the development team and the stakeholders. You will also be writing user stories and listing them on the product backlog based on each user story’s priority. However, it is important to note that you won’t be interfering with the work of the team. Your job will be to act as a liaison between the team and the stakeholders so that everyone is on the same page.

If you want to become a Product Owner, you must develop an empathetic attitude towards the team members and the stakeholders. You should be able to understand both sides so that they can reach an amicable solution. As a Product Owner, you will be playing an important role in making the project successful. If you don’t have any experience with the scrum framework and want to become a Product Owner, it is always recommended to go for the Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) certification

Responsibilities of Product Owner

  • Prioritizing Product Backlog:- Define and prioritize the Product Backlog that is expressing the goal.
  • Maximizing Return on Investment (ROI):- Ensure that the project earns maximum ROI.
  • Creating a vision:- Establish and communicate the product’s vision. Answer questions like Why is the product unique? Who are the targeted customers? What are other competitors in the market?
  • Addressing questions:- Answer any questions that the team or stakeholder might have regarding the user story. For example, why is a specific task on priority? They can delegate the questions but, should ensure that all queries are addressed.
  • Providing boundaries:- Boundaries describe the realities under which the vision must be realized. Product Owners provide these boundaries, usually in the form of constraints.

For example:

  1. Maintain the same functionality with a reduced per-unit cost
  2. Use half the memory
  3. The task must be completed by a specific date
