Stop Wishing and Start Thriving: How to Turn Your Life Around in a Year

how to turn your life

We’ve all had tough periods where we were plagued by self-doubt or questioning our purpose in life. COVID-19 was a major roadblock for millions of people.

In addition to health anxiety and grief from losing loved ones, many also found themselves thrust into quarantine isolation or suffering from job loss. Bouncing back from that is difficult, especially if you feel like you don’t even know what direction you want to move in. And then there are others who struggled to find their purpose even before the pandemic. From shallow relationships to an unfulfilling career, there are so many ways we get stuck wishing instead of making things happen.

It’s time to end the constant longing. The genie in a magic bottle isn’t coming, and you don’t need one. You have the ability to turn your life into whatever you want it to be. While the road to success and happiness is harder for some than others, we all have the ability to start moving our lives in the direction we want them to go. Here’s how you can stop longing for things that feel out of reach and begin bringing them into your life for real.

Define Success on Your Own Terms

That’s right. Success is not what you see on Instagram or what your wealthy best friend’s life looks like. Success isn’t “I wish I was them.” Success should be, “This is me, and I feel good about it.” This could mean working fewer hours and having more time to devote to your passions. It could be earning a degree and striving toward your dream job. It could even mean adopting a child and raising it as a thriving single parent instead of waiting for your soulmate to come along and give you the family you’ve always dreamed of. Success can even be something as simple as having a cozy studio and a pet to come home to. The sooner you define success on your terms and own it, the better off you’ll be. The longer you cling to guilt, embarrassment, and fear of being a failure to others, the longer you’ll stay stuck.

Make Definitive Plans

Instead of lamenting over how you don’t have a better job or any money, start asking why that is. Maybe you aren’t qualified for the job you want. Okay. What do you need to get there? If it’s a degree, don’t write yourself off because you already went to college, you got a degree you hate, you dropped out or you feel too old to attend school. These are all excuses that hinder you from lighting your inner fire. Even if money is tight, you can look into financing options that are flexible. You may be able to take out a loan from a private lender, which will help you get ahead in life without going broke in the process.

Get Rid of Distractions

Avoidance comes in many forms, and sometimes, it’s cleverly disguised as productivity or busyness. Sometimes, we’ll even welcome problems into our lives to avoid dealing with the real ones that are more painful and difficult to overcome. Instead of addressing a long history of self-doubt and insecurity, you may throw yourself into endless dates and empty relationships. You might be obsessed with finding “the one” to avoid having to be alone with yourself. Friends that only gossip and create drama can give you a way to make yourself feel important. Overworking, neglecting self-care, and even overindulging in things you think make you feel good are all avenues around important inner work.

To start changing your life, you need to get to the bottom of the barrel. It’s dark, usually lonely, and often full of a lot of heavy emotions that can be difficult to handle. You may not feel strong enough to face it on your own, and that’s okay. Working with a therapist is one of the best things you can do to start gaining the skills and emotional intelligence necessary to improve your life. On a personal front, you should begin thoroughly examining your relationships and activities. Ask yourself what they bring to your life. If you can’t identify ways they enrich your existence, then why are you holding onto them? More importantly, what’s making them hard to let go of?

Concluding as You Believe in a Better Future

You are able to achieve your dreams and lead a life you’re proud of if you believe so. Changing your life in a single year may feel impossible, but if you shift your mindset, anything can happen. While it takes more than 365 days to achieve many long-term goals, there is so much potential for you to get to know yourself and change gears in 12 months. Instead of waiting for a magic moment for everything to fall together, start embracing the potential you have in the present moment to bring out the change you so desperately long for.
