How to Master the Art of College Essay Writing
Honesty, despite what you may have been told, writing a college essay isn’t that difficult. No matter which college you go to, it is likely that the process is going to be very much the same. On this page, we want to share with you a few tips to help you master the art of college essay writing.
Understand the essay
This is so important.
You cannot possibly write an essay unless you understand what it is about. We are not just talking about the subject matter here. We are also talking about the style of essay that you have been asked to write. After all, a persuasive essay will be written in a completely different way to a review-style essay.
Obviously, the subject matter is also going to play a role in your understanding of the essay. If there are any ambiguous terms, then you will want to make sure that you talk to your professor. They will be able to tell you anything that you need to know. Remember; the professor isn’t there to confuse you. They are there to ensure that you write the best essay that you possibly can.
Do your research
No matter what type of essay you are writing, you are going to need to do a substantial amount of research. This is where a lot of people end up going wrong. They cling to the work that they completed in class only. Sure, you may be able to coast to a C grade or something if you rely on this only, but if you want the highest grades, then you are going to need to go out there and do your own research.
Honestly, you should be dedicating at least 50% of your time to doing your research. Make sure that you write up a lot of notes. Also, consider an outline for your essay, especially if you are writing a synthesis essay. You may even want to start planning your essay at this stage. Just make sure that you collect all of your sources along the way. This will help you to score the highest possible marks in your essay. You can get an A+ also by simply deciding to buy college papers online from a professional writing service.
The key is essay planning
If you want to put together a brilliant essay, then you need to plan it before you write. As you probably know, there are three sections to an essay:
- Introduction
- Body
- Conclusion
You will be writing the introduction and conclusion last. These are important parts of your essay, but you won’t be able to write them until the bulk of the essay is in place.
When you are planning the main part of your essay, you will want to write down a bulleted list of your main arguments or comments. Make sure that all of these sections flow well into one another. Remember; the things that you plan here are not set in stone. You will likely be changing them up when you write the essay.
However, by planning in advance, you will be able to see whether you are missing any main arguments and the areas where you may need to do a bit more research.
Writing your essay
You don’t want to rush your essay. You should do the writing at least a few days in advance of your due date, although you may need a bit more time if the essay is going to be more substantial.
Edit your essay
Do you know the difference between a B and an A on your essay? Well, it is all about the editing. Once you have written your essay, leave it a couple of days. You can then come back to it and see if it flows well. You can also check for any grammatical and spelling errors. When you are editing, make sure that you stay within the word count. If a point doesn’t make sense, or you do not have any sources to back it up, then you are going to want to remove it from your essay.
Learn from your essays
Didn’t get the mark that you wanted on your essay? Don’t worry. This is something which happens to absolutely everybody. Don’t throw the essay in the trash just yet, though. Go through any comments that have been left by the professor. Note where you gained marks and where you dropped marks. You will be able to use this as a learning experience for the future.
