10 Ways To Leave A Lasting Impression On Your Readers

Leave A Lasting

“Remember: Plot is no more than footprint left in the snow after your characters have run by on their way to incredible destinations.” — Ray Bradbury

Readers read a lot of books, but they only remember those worth remembering. Some are forgotten the moment they turn the last page, while others stay with the readers forever. It takes a lot of hard work on behalf of writers to write something so captivating that readers refuse to part with it.

If you wish to become one such writer, read on to know some basic tricks to leave a lasting impression on your readers.

Present complete and well-researched ideas

You do not want to burden your readers with half-baked ideas. Remember, it is your job to present your readers with intensively researched and well-rounded ideas to allow them to learn and form their viewpoints. You do not want readers to question your ideas and look for proof somewhere else.

Do not compromise on the quality of your work. If it takes a few extra months to finish your book, it is worth the effort.

Know Your Audience

Figuring out what to write and for whom to write is the most challenging aspect of a book. Choosing a topic depends on various factors like your knowledge about it, the popularity of the genre, why do people like it, how can you widen the scope of the topic, etc. Once you have chosen a topic, ask yourself, why would people read it?

The reader community comes from all ages, and their tastes vary accordingly. Try to decipher your book will attract which age group and why. Make sure you answer all these questions while creating your book template and keep your reader’s interest in your mind.

As a writer, it is your responsibility to give your readers what they want and need.

Make sure your writing is original

Your readers do not want to read something they have already read, probably in different words or format. It can be difficult to come up with new ideas when the competition is strong and everybody is constantly experimenting with something new but remember that you can successfully do this. If you have not been able to find something new and original yet, do not stress, you will find something unique soon.

Start With a Bang

Opening a novel can be tricky because by the time we finally muster the courage to start writing a book, we get very enthusiastic and forget to plan a good opening. Remember, the first impression is the last, and you do want to make a great first impression on your readers. Spend some time on time on creating a great opening structure; if not, you can always come back and make changes.

The narrative voice

“Words mean more than what is set down on paper. It takes the human voice to infuse them with deeper meaning.”  Maya Angelou

Readers always crave to build a strong emotional connection with the characters and the plot of the book, and this connection is intimately linked to the narrative voice. Focus on style, syntax, cadence, and tone to build a strong narrative voice, a voice that readers feel compelled to listen to. A unique writing voice is not something you develop instantly, but it will take a lot of hard work, practice, and commitment.

If you want your readers to have an out of the world experience while reading your book, do not shy away from the hard work.

Build Your Characters With Love

It is a fact widely acknowledged that when readers read a book, something which they remember the most are the characters. Characters are readers’ imaginary friends whom they will never meet and someone they will never get out of their heads. Your characters will hence play a dominant role in determining whether your book will leave a lasting impression or not.

Books with such strong characters that they featured in the title of the book, like Eleanor & ParkA Man Called OveRebecca, etc., have been great successes. As a writer, you must model strong characters while crafting your novel outline template, characters who will make the readers forget their lived reality momentarily.

Social media presence

Building a strong social media presence is a great strategy to not let your readers forget about the book. Through constantly posting on social media and interacting with fans, you can keep your characters and book alive. You can kick start discussions about what the characters went on to do with their lives after the novel got finished, start a fanfiction page, illustrate some scenes from your book, etc., to let your readers believe that your book will always be there for them.

Do not indulge in superfluous language.

You absolutely do not want your readers looking up for complicated word meanings or have to read out a sentence twice while reading your book. Superfluous language does not guarantee success for your book. Write in simple and clear language so that your readers can enjoy your book while staying in their comfort zone.

Avoid grammatical mistakes

Grammatical mistakes are a big NO. Grammatical errors, wrong sentence structuring, and punctuation mistakes can put off your readers greatly. Make sure your book is edited and proofread multiple times before it reaches your readers.

There are various writing software’s available online you can use for writing to avoid making grammatical mistakes. Such software automatically detects basic grammar mistakes and saves you the time of correcting them manually.

Respect your readers

Last but not least, respect your readers. Think of them as smart and reasonable individuals who are investing their time in your book. You hence must make them feel welcome, and the same should be reflected in your writing.

Final Thoughts:-

Novel writing is a long and daunting process and puts a lot of pressure on the writer. It is important to make a lasting impression on your readers but do not put more pressure on yourself by stressing incessantly over this. Novel writing is an art, and if you pursue your art with purity, dedication, and hard work, you will automatically build a strong reader base who love your work.
