press freedom day Quotes

We celebrate World Press Day annually on May 3rd. The Freedom of the press is imperative to keep the entire world linked through news from different parts. Free media influences the progress of a country. The press acts as a medium of communication between a nation and its people.

And a Free Press has a colossal obligation to report the truth to the country’s people. And it also helps in forming people’s opinions. Hence, to commemorate the significance of the press, every year the world celebrates World Press Freedom Day.

May 3rd acts as a reminder to the governments that they should respect their commitment to press freedom. It is also a day of reflection among every media professional about their professional ethics. May 3rd reminds us that we all should defend the media from attacks on their independence. And we also need to pay tribute to all the journalists who lost their lives during the practice of their profession.

It is the date to encourage and develop new initiatives in favour of press freedom and retain the Freedom of the press worldwide.

The History of World Press Day

The UN General Assembly proclaimed one Press Freedom Day in December 1993. Since then, on 3rd may every year, we celebrate the anniversary of the Windhoek declaration across the world as World Press Freedom Day.

The Windhoek Declaration is all about fostering, maintaining, and establishing an independent and Free Press. It highlighted the importance of a Free Press for developing and maintaining democracy in a nation, along with economic development.

Although press day is celebrated from December 1993, the idea has much deeper roots in the United Nations. Article 19 of the 1948 Universal Declaration on human rights states that every person has the Freedom of opinion and expression.

The Importance of Press Freedom Day

Press came much before democracy came to India. And it became the voice of ordinary people, and it is also considered to be the voice of the voiceless. Even before independence, the press existed. And it was the only method of interaction between the ruling government and the people of the nation.

Even Though democracy is mighty in its own terms and conditions, it cannot work efficiently without media, especially the Free Press. The media establishes a link between the government and its people and tends to inform people about the functions performed by the government. It also tells the government about the sufferings faced by people in their respective constituencies. Thus, a democratic system can only work when the state enjoys a Free Press.

The British government tried to control the Freedom of the press in India multiple times. That is because the press advocated the idea of a free nation. Press stands for the civic rights, religious rights, and political rights of the people. And it also influences decision-making by the people.

The press of a nation helps its people to compare the past and present experiences, words, and actions done by different government bodies. Citizens receive new information about projects, policies, schemes, amendments, laws, etc., through the press- by which they can analyze the working of the government and evaluate if the actions are beneficial for them.

What Is Threatening the Freedom of Press?

The press is a crucial instrument for accounting. While we can forget about the promises made by leaders and government authorities, a printed newspaper, audio, video recording will act as a piece of evidence and remind us.

The people who worked in the press are fearless in performing string operations to find out many hidden realities. Press also fights against unfulfilled promises, misuse of power, and corruption. And the factors that are threatening the Freedom of the press are:

  • Corporate Sector: It’s not only the government that tries to control the press, but sometimes it’s also the corporate sector that tries to control the press to increase business. Many corporate sectors try to bribe the editors, writers, and reporters to retain the voice of the media.
  • The Brutality of Reporters and Journalists: We have been through much such news where reporters and journalists were killed to present a piece of information or cover a story. It’s sad.
  • Partiality: Press workers are often treated by hateful trolls.
