Swami Vivekananda, the original name Narendranath Datta was a famous Indian Hindu Monk. He was the man behind the foundation of the Ramakrishna Mission. He was a brilliant student right from his school days and had exposure in several fields such as arts, music, studies, and literature. Vivekananda was one of the prominent figures in the introduction of the Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western World.
Swami was born on 12th January 1863 in Calcutta, Bengal Presidency, British India. Swami was born to Vishwanath Datta, who was an attorney at the Calcutta High Court, and Bhubaneshwar Devi, who was a devout housewife.
Swami Vivekananda’s parents played an important role in his upbringing. The progressive, rational attitude of his father & the religious temperament of his mother helped in shaping his thinking and personality. Hence from starting Swami was inclined towards spiritualism.
He was very much influenced by his Guru, Ramakrishna. His Guru made him clear with different thoughts of life. He learned that all living beings were an embodiment of the divine self. Therefore He learned that service to God could be rendered by service to humankind.
He is also called as “The Great Indian Monk“.
During the late 19th century, Swami was responsible for raising awareness regarding interfaith and brought Hinduism to the status of a major world religion. He played a dominant role in the revival of Hinduism in India. Moreover, he contributed at large to the concept of nationalism in colonial India.
Vivekananda established the Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission in 1897. Swami & other disciples spent hours practicing meditation and religious austerities every day.
