The history of this Day begins with the successful test of India’s first nuclear bomb in Pokhran, Rajasthan. On, May 11, 1998, India conducted five nuclear tests – code-named ‘Operation Shakti’.
The Indian Army, in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), the Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMDER), and the Bhabha Atomic Centre, carried out two additional nuclear tests on May 13. These tests were overseen by the late A P J Abdul Kalam.
After these tests, India became the sixth country in the world to join the elite squad of nuclear-armed nations. Former Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee had declared May 11 as National Technology Day.
