What To Know Before Buying A New Mattress

What To Know Before Buying A Mattress

Most of us spend more than 30% of our lives in bed if we follow the doctor recommended 8 hours of good quality sleep every night that can help us to stay mentally and physically healthy. To get sufficient good quality sleep, you need to have a perfect sleep environment and follow good sleep habits. The leading factor for having a perfect sleep environment is how good your mattress is. A bad mattress can cause restless and fragmented sleep which can lead to several mental and physical health issues and your productivity during the day is going to suffer.

A bad mattress can cause all kinds of pains in joints and muscles when you wake up in the morning.

The mattress industry has made big strides in using the latest technologies to come with better mattresses, but sometimes the number of features can overwhelm you and you may end up not buying a mattress that is right for you.

Here are things you should know before buying a mattress.

1. Focus on comfort

The first and foremost thing to consider is that your mattress should be a comfortable one. You should buy a comfortable mattress after testing it on several factors, like the firmness level, the size, the type of material used. You should remember that it is not always true that the most expensive mattresses may be the best one for you. You should avoid a cheap one that may be comfortable but may be made of toxic materials.

2. The right size

You should find the mattress that is the right size for your sleep. You should change a bed if you have outgrown it and are managing, although feeling uncomfortable when asleep. If you sleep with your partner, you should buy King-sized or California king mattresses as they provide enough space for sleeping and intimacy.

3. The right firmness

You should find the mattress that has the right firmness that will support your sleeping position, whether you sleep on your back, on your sides, or stomach. The labels on the mattress may not be accurate as it varies across the brands. You should personally test the mattress before finalizing which is the best for your sleep.

You should buy a mattress that is firm enough to properly support your spine, shoulders, hips, and other parts of your body to give you a good quality sleep.  You should not buy a mattress that is too firm and may create pressure points, and not contour to the natural curve of your spine.

You should not buy a mattress that is too soft as it may not provide enough support to your spine and it may lead to you suffering from back pain when you wake up.

4. Type of material used

You will find all kinds of mattresses in the stores whether online or departmental stores in your area, like memory foam, latex, innerspring mattresses, air beds, waterbeds. You should spend some time and effort in finding the material of the mattress that suits your sleep needs.

Most common innerspring mattresses have metal coils that are prone to sagging and are known to be a safe haven for allergens. Innerspring mattresses can be noisy and don’t support motion transfer and may give a bouncy feel as well which can be uncomfortable for some people.

Memory foam is not the ultimate answer for a perfect mattress as you may feel hot in it. Memory foam also does give out a chemical odor that some people find unpleasant and is prone to developing body indentations after some time.

Latex is better than memory foam. However, the mattress should be made of natural latex and not an artificial one. Mattress made from natural latex is going to be costlier than the one made from artificial latex.

If you have a good amount of money to invest in a mattress and want to get the benefits of the different types of mattresses, you should buy a hybrid mattress that is either made of latex and memory foam combination or can be made of innerspring and memory foam.

5. Stick to budget

You should decide on how much you are ready to invest in a new mattress and stick to it. The mattresses in stores come with too many features that may end up overwhelming you, so ensure you stick to the budget and don’t go overboard.

6. Read Consumer reviews

You should read online consumer reviews before finalizing on a mattress, they will give you a general idea of how the mattress is going to turn out.

Generally, trusted brands always have better value.

Conclusion:-

You should remember that you are going to spend most of the time in your bed when you are at home, so spend some time and effort in picking the right mattress that suits your sleep requirements. A right mattress will go a long way in helping you get a sufficiently good quality sleep that is vital for your mental and physical well-being.
