Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman

Sitharaman was born in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, on August 18, 1959, to Savitri and Narayanan Sitharaman. Sitharaman’s father was from Musiri, Tiruchirappalli, and her mother’s family was from Thiruvenkadu, as well as Thanjavur and Salem, Tamil Nadu. Her father worked for the Indian Railways and Nirmala Sitharaman was born into a Tamil Iyengar Brahmin household.

She went to Madras and Tiruchirappalli for her education. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Tiruchirapalli’s Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College. She moved to Delhi in 1984 to pursue her Master of Arts and Master of Philosophy in economics at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

Starting of Political Career

In 2006, Sitharaman joined the BJP, and in 2010, she was named the party’s spokesman. She was appointed as a junior minister in Narendra Modi’s cabinet in 2014, and she was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Andhra Pradesh in June of the same year.

She was one of the 12 candidates nominated by the BJP in May 2016 to run in the Rajya Sabha elections, which are set to take place on June 11th. Her Karnataka seat was successfully fought.

During her second Budget speech in February 2020, Sitharaman made a contentious assertion, claiming that the Indus script-hieroglyphs had been deciphered and that guilds of the Saraswati-Sindhu civilization and the Harappan seals, which date from 3300 BCE, were exceptional.

On February 1, 2022, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman delivered her fourth Budget, making her the first female Finance Minister to do so. She is India’s first full-time female Finance Minister and the second woman to give the Union Budget after previous Prime Minister India Gandhi.

In the Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in its second term at the Centre, Nirmala Sitharaman has two key portfolios: finance and corporate affairs. She holds the distinction of being the country’s first full-time female finance minister. When Indira Gandhi was Prime Minister of India, she had finance as a secondary portfolio for a short time.

Insights About Nirmala Sitharaman

During the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) rule of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, she was appointed to the National Commission for Women. Sitharaman joined the BJP in 2008 and was named the party’s spokeswoman the following year. As a BJP candidate in the Rajya Sabha in 2014, she was elected to the House of Commons.

Sitharaman had to defend the Narendra Modi government against allegations of corruption in the Rafale aircraft deal struck between India and France during her time as defense minister. The Opposition had been exploiting alleged wrongdoing in the Rafale deal as an electoral plank in the run-up to Lok Sabha elections 2019, therefore Sitharaman’s firefighting in public and in Parliament was critical. Sitharaman was also a member of the committee in charge of drafting the BJP’s election manifesto.
