Star Trek is a popular American media franchise. It is based on science & fiction television series, which was created by Gene Roddenberry.  Star Trek is know referred to as The Original Series“. This was first debuted in 1966. Then is was aired for three seasons on NBC.

Roddenberry was highly inspired by the novels of Horatio Hornblower, the satirical book Gulliver’s Travels, and Westerns such as the television series Wagon Train. These all adventure stories can be seen in the 22-episode Star Trek: The Animated Series and six feature films. The first series came in 1966.  The other six feature films are  Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek Into Darkness and  Star Trek Beyond. 

The Star Trek fans are called Trekkies or Trekkers. The franchise group has an extensive range of spin-offs such as games, figurines, novels, toys and comics. The franchise has generated $10 billion in revenue. And in 2016, this became one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time.

Star Trek is also known for its cultural influence and its progressive civil rights stances. The culture can be easily visible in movies such as  the submarine thriller Crimson Tide to the animated series South Park. In 1968, for the Hugo Award, individual episodes of Star Trek, were nominated. Further, in 2016, the franchise was listed in the Guinness World Records as the most successful sci-fi television franchise in the world. The non science fiction specific awards, the Star Trek series won 31 Emmy Awards.
