David Portnoy is the founder of the digital sports conglomerate ‘Barstool Sports’ and an American sports media figure.

Portnoy is best known for his popular Twitter account, where he posts witty sports commentary for his followers. In addition to his success, he launched the ‘One Bite with Davey Pageviews pizza review series.

After foregoing a college athletic career, the media magnate, who has an estimated net worth of $118 million, turned his love of sports (and sports betting) into a business venture. Portnoy was arrested by New York City police on May 12, 2015, after he and three Barstool employees handcuffed each other on the floor of NFL headquarters to protest Deflategate, and again in 2019, when he was placed in a holding cell at Mercedes-Benz Stadium for a portion of Super Bowl LIII. In the latter case, he had made fake passes for a press event the day before and was thus barred from attending the game.

The National Labor Relations Board investigated Portnoy in 2019 for tweets alleging that he illegally threatened to fire his employees if they unionised. Portnoy reached an informal settlement with the Board in December, agreeing to delete his threatening tweets and remove any potential anti-union material created by Barstool Sports.

The settlement also stated that the original Twitter account encouraging employees to unionise was actually owned by Barstool in an effort to expose labour organisers.
